Reviving a wonderful qawwaali from one of those not so well known films, and yet a gem of a composition and a fabulous presentation. The film is Mujrim Kaun Khooni Kaun (1965). It is a social drama produced under the banner of Pratima Pictures, Bombay and it is directed by Ramneek Vaidya. The star cast includes Jairaj, Indira aka Indira Billi, Heeralal, Sapru, Shammi, Bela Bose, Asit Sen, Raj Mehra, Brahm Bhardwaj, Gopal Sehgal, Shyam Kumar, V Gopal, Mirza Musharraf, Sherry etc. The lyrics for this film are written by three poets viz., Anjum Jaipuri, Akhtar Romani and Naqsh Lyallpuri. This particular qawwaali is written by Akhtar Romani. The music composition is by Baabul – another one of the unsung talents that have produced absolutely A class music, but never really got their due recognition in the industry.
The qawaali is one more of the ‘baitbaazi’ type, and there are two teams that are trying to outdo each other. The theme of most of such competitive qawwaalis is of course love, and the standoff between the male and female protagonists on some specific topic related to love. So is the case in this qawwali also, wherein the two teams are trying to establish the superiority of their side.
The singing voices are of Jaani Babu Qawwaal and Shamshad Begum. However, I believe that there is a second voice on both sides, which I have not been able to identify specifically. The gentleman’s team is led by Jaani Babu Qawwaal himself. On the ladies side, I believe the singer on he left is Nasrin. And I cannot identify the second actress in the ladies team. I would request our readers to help with specific identifications, of the additional singers.
There is a number of familiar faces visible in the audience. One can readily make out Jairaj, and the lady sitting with him is Indira Billi. Others in the audience identifiable are Sapru, Raj Mehra, Shyam Kumar
So here is a comparatively obscure, but yet a very lively and very thought provoking qawwaali for your listening pleasure. Enjoy.
nigaahe kyaa wo jo dekhen ye jalweh darr darr ke
ke ye jeenaa bhi kyaa jeenaa ke jiyen mar mar ke
Woe to the glances that espy the splendor (of beautiful ladies) with fear and trepidation
Woe to such a living, that one dies a thousand deaths every day
chaley to aaye mehfil mein bahaanaa kar kar ke
na hogi baat utthengey aahen bhar bhar ke
Who are these uninvited people in the gathering
They will not be able to say anything, but heave a sigh and
sitamgar le kar kitney, na jaane aaye fitney
koi ye naaz dekhe, zaraa andaaz dekhe
nigaahen kaafiraanaa adaayen qaatilaanaa
niraali baaten in ki anokhi ghaaten in ki
These perpetrators of injustice are here with many more mischief up their sleeves
Just see their vanity, and their panache
Disloyalty drips from their eyes, and their charms are villainous
Strange are the things they say, and strange are the traps they lay
hamaaraa chain le kar, hamen dikhlaayen tewar
magar ye jalwe saare, bhatakte maare maare
jo hum na maan letey, to ye khud jaan letey
ke in kaa mol kyaa hai, badaa ye bol kyaa hai
na hotey phir fasaane ye, jahaan mein ghar ghar ke
They have taken away our peace of mind, and yet we are the ones to get the blame
But all this charm and grace, would be lost walking the streets
Be thankful that we acknowledge (your beauty), else you would have known its true value
I don’t speak with arrogance, but I know the true value
If you would know too, then these troubles in every home would not have been
bade dildaar ban ke, ye jo baitthe hain tan ke
zamaanaa jaantaa hai, inhey pehchaantaa hai
ye matlab ke hain bande, garaz ke daalen phande
hai jhootthi in ki yaari, dikhaawe ki dildaaree
Them, who are sitting with arrogance, claiming to be the winners of hearts
The world knows them, in their true colors
They are friends for a reason, and appear gracious for they need something
Their friendship is a fake, it is just a pretense of magnanimity
ke ye khud pe martey hain, usey rusvaa kartey hain
badey hoshiyaar hain ye, badey ayyaar hain ye
wafaa ka dum bhartey hain, badee baaten kartey hain
haqeeqat se begaaney, ye kyaa jaaney anjaaney
milegaa kyaa inhey ke ye, sawwaali dar dar ke
They are only concerned about self, and they defame us
They are cunning and shrewd, and seem to be friends
But believe me, they are not
They are far removed from reality, what would they know
They are the beggars of many a door, what can they hope to receive
jisey ilzaam denaa, usi kaa naam lenaa
haseeno ki adaa hai, adaa bhi haaye kyaa hai
karen ye dil ki chori, aur us pe seena zori
kahen to kyaa kahen hum, hai behtar chup rahen hum
On one hand, they would blame, and in the same breath they praise
These are the wiles and machinations of the beautiful ones
They will steal the heart, and then in turn bully the victims
Oh what more can we say, it is better to hold one’s peace
ye jo ik baat kee hai, samajhdaari yehi hai
shikaayat khaam-khaan ki, nahin hoti hai achhee
lagaavat se kyaa haasil, banaavat se kyaa haasil
alag manzil hamaari, judaa raahen tumhaari
Ah, this is the first sensible thing you have said this evening
It is not good to raise a mountain of unnecessary complaints
Nothing will come from pretensions, and false friendships
Our ways, our destinations are separate
mohabbat aur badhti hai, dilon mein lad lad ke
The lover’s squabbles make the hearts grow fonder, and love stronger

But here comes another confusion for me, a few days back, I have identified with the help of IMDB.com, another ARUNA, who appears as a main dancer in Rajkapoor`s “Anari”(1959)song “Sab kuchch seekha maine, na seekhi hoshiyaari”.
This Aruna(ANAARI) has been identified by IMDB as ARUNA(1)
and
this ARUNA appearing in the qawwali, daag, parayadhan) has been identified as ARUNA(2)
Anyone is interested in this?????????

Sudhir bhai
I don`t know who Nasrin is, But the main actress who lip syncs for the song(not the lady with feathered cap, but the other one with zaree pallu on her head-3:29 to 3:35)looks like ARUNA.
I have seen ARUNA lip syncing and dancing for the song from Yash chopra`s DAAG(1973)(with padma khanna)”Ni main yaar manaanaani chaahe log boliya bole”
I have also seen her in Bombai ka baabu(1960)dance song “Dekhne mein bhola hai, dil ka salauna”(She is one of the dancers alongwith suchitra sen, bela bose)
Further I have seen her also in Paraya dhan(1971)dancing song “Holi re holi, rangon ki toli, mukh na chhupaa raani saamne aa..ahh haayre
(manaadey, asha bhosle-picturised on chinoo, omprakash, jayashree.t,Balraj sahni,jayashree.t. and the above mentioned ARUNA)
And one gentleman sitting on the sofa is Mohan sherry or Sherry(You know him, You have identified him in your post regarding Qawwali from Do Khiladi)
and the old gentleman(with cap) with round spectacles sitting with shyam kumar must be Mirza Musharraf
