“Daroga jee” (1949) was a one woman show all the way. This movie, produced by Nargis Arts (Nargis’ home production) was meant to show Nargis’ ability to sing all kinds of songs. So far as many as seven songs picturised on Nargis have been discussed in this blog, in which she was shown singing romantic song, broken heart song, bullying shopkeepers song, etc etc.

Her ability to sell products was not showcased in those songs though, so here is just that genre of song. In this song, Nargis is seen in a market where various small time service providers (vegetable sellers, barber, cobbler, knife sharpeners etc) are peddling their wares. In that market place, Nargis sells her flowers while singing this song. So this is one of the earliest sales pitch songs in Hindi movies.

It is quite a hummable song. Lyrics by Manohar Lal Khanna are quite cute and the voice of Geeta Roy (later Dutt) sounds perfect for the young Nargis. Bulo C Rani’s understated music is quite nice and appropriate for this song.

The picturisation is nice and cute too. The picturisation shows interesting spectacles, like two cycle goers colliding at the market and going for each others throats, only to be separated by others. And then the customer, being served by the barber, checks up his moustache in a mirror, and on finding that half of his moustache has been removed keeping the other half intact, he retaliates by trying to uproot half the moustache of the barber. 🙂
