Teri tasweer se aankhen meri kyun hatati nahin

I apologize to the readers if they feel that I seem to be stuck in the second half of 60s, while I am selecting songs from Usha Khanna’s films. It seems to be true. Hard as I may try, I am not able to extricate myself from the films of the years from 1966 to 1970. And the reason is that I simply keep bumping into one wonderful gem after another, and the music itself compels me to continue writing about this era of Usha ji’s career. From all counts that I can admit so far, the 60s was the most prolific and the also the most tuneful decade for this composer.

‘Samay Bada Balwaan’ is social drama film from 1969. The film is produced under the banner of Minerva Movietone, the production company of Sohrab Modi. The film is produced and directed by him. The lyrics are written by DN Madhok, an ‘ancient mariner’ in the industry by the time 1969 came around. The star cast of the film includes Sohrab Modi, Mehtab, Shailesh Kumar, Shahida, Aruna Irani, David etc. Arun ji Deshmukh has provided the following brief synopsis of the film in one of his prior comments.

SAMAY BADA BALWAN-1969 was a film from a balwan film co. and a balwan producer/director. The message of the film was ‘Time is a great healer, time is a great leveler’. Uttam (Sohrab Modi) and Damayanti (Mehtab) are a rich and happy couple with everything in their favour. But suddenly a raging fire destroys everything that this rich cotton growing merchant had and they become poor in their big haveli. Uttam’s younger brother Ram (Sailesh Kumar) is engaged to Gauri (Shahida) the elder daughter of Seth Dhunichand (Wasti), who breaks the engagement. Uttam’s brother in law (Damayanti’s brother) Dwarakadas (KN Singh) breaks his partnership with him and joins his rival. Dwarkadas’ son Baloo (Pravin) gets engaged to Dhunichand’s second daughter. On the insistence of his wife, Uttam goes for the engagement ceremony. But there he is accused of stealing five thousand rupees. On his way home he waylaid and is beaten by Dwaraka’s goons etc etc. Within few years, Uttam and his son build their empire again. And Dwarakadas and Dhunichand lose business and become poor, thus establishing that lesson of Time i.e. to value every relationship irrespective of money blah…blah…blah. Despite being a Sohrab Modi film, somehow the public could not digest the overdose of “updesh” of morality and the film went to its rest house very soon.

Here is another delightfully soft song of the hearts in love. The song has been rendered so emotionally by Rafi Saab and Asha Bhosle, that it simply takes one into a world of dreams away from the where one is. There is a singular lack of any overbearing instrumentation. The music is softly being rendered in the background. The song is simply carried on the voices of Rafi Saab and Asha ji. There is such an avid passion in Rafi Saab’s voice, that it adds to the urgency in the mind of even the listeners. A lovely piece of music. Enjoy.

teri tasveer se aankhen meri kyun hat’ti nahin
sochtaa hoon isey kehtey na ho pyaar kahin

Your image is so charismatic that I am unable to take my eyes away from it
Is this what love is?

meethi meethi si hain bechaini’aan aur chain nahin
sochti hoon ke isey kehtey na ho pyaar kahin

A prickly sweet restlessness pervades, there is no peace in the mind
Is this what love is?

din guzar jaaye yoon hi raat bhi kat jaaye yoon
ji yahi chaahe tassavur mein tere baitthi rahoon

Let the days and nights pass by just so
And I continue to be in your thoughts and imagination forever

beqaraari mein hi mujhko qaraar aataa hai
chain kehtey hain jisey mere liye chain nahin

This impatient restlessness is becoming more pleasing for me
What people call as peace and tranquility – it is not so for me

gar yehi pyaar hai is pyaar pe pyaar aaye hamen
aur tadpaaye hamen aur bhi tadpaaye hamen

If this is what love is, then I am in love with this love
Be it so that this love torments me more, and then torments yet some more

dil ye kehtaa hai ye mohabbat ka dastoor nahin
teri bechaini’aan thham jaayen ye manzoor nahin

My heart says it is not so in the tenets of love
That your mind’s turbulence may find some comfort and pause
My love just will not accept it
