Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Ek dil thhaa mera jo tera ho gayaa

Posted on: October 22, 2011

This movie is called “Chhupa Rustam” (1965) which could translate to “undercover agent” in English. Now this movie and this song actually are “Chhupa Rustam” in the sense that few people including the authoritative Geet Kosh seem to be aware of this song. For that matter, people are not even aware of the existence of this movie either though movies of the same name which were released in 1970s and 1990s are somewhat better known.

This song from this movie “Chhupa Rustam” (1965) really lives up to the title. This song is a surprise package that deserves to be much better known.

The song has lilting music, resembing O P Nayyar’s tune, but the music composer is Bulo C Rani. The movie had Geeta Dutt’s voice, who was trying to make a comeback as a playback singing, and this is one of the earlier songs of that time.

I have not been able to find about the details aboit the lyricist of this song. I request our knowledgeable readers to tell us about the lyricist of this song.

The song is picturised on our by now well known B grade movie duo of Chitra and Azad.

This song is an out and out A + composition. With better marketing, this song could have gone on to become a timeless classic, instead of ending up as a forgotten song.

Song-Ek dil thhaa mera jo tera ho gayaa (Chhupa Rustam) (1965) Singer-Geeta Dutt, Lyrics- MD-Bulo C Rani

Lyrics

ek dil thhaa mera
jo tera ho gayaa
jaan ke balam
maan ke
sapnon mein kho gayaa
ek dil thhaa mera
jo tera ho gayaa
jaan ke balam
maan ke
sapnon mein kho gayaa
ek dil thhaa mera

hamne to dil de diya
teri dekhke ye adaa
shaan se
bade maan se
shaan se
bade maan se
dil ko loot liyaa
ek dil thhaa mera
jo tera ho gayaa
jaan ke balam
maan ke
sapnon mein kho gayaa
ek dil thhaa mera

dil ka qasoor hai ye
jo tujhpe yoon aa gaya
ab berukhi chhod de
kyun de raha sazaa
roothh ke
hamen loot ke
roothh ke
hamen loot ke
tujhko kyaa mil gayaa
ek dil thhaa mera
jo tera ho gayaa
jaan ke balam
maan ke
sapnon mein kho gayaa
ek dil thhaa mera

tujhe dekhke o sanam
ho gaye nashe mein kyun ham
tere haath ko thham ko
main bhulaa doongi saare gham
muskuraa
zaraa paas aa
muskuraa
zaraa paas aa
dil se dil tu milaa
ek dil thhaa mera
jo tera ho gayaa
jaan ke balam
maan ke
sapnon mein kho gayaa
ek dil thhaa mera

Congratulations to Asha Bhonsle. This figure of 11000 recordings, including 8000 Hindi movie songs, is a realistic figure and authentic figure.

Earlier, we have seen so many claims of many more songs by many singers.Claims of 25,000 + , 28,000 + and even more were common and in fact even Guiness Books of World records of 1970s issues carried such entries but they were deleted a few years later.

We have to appreciate the fact that singing 25000 + songs is humanely impossible for any artist, however prolific he/she may be and however long a career he/she may have. Now that a firm cap had been put on the number of songs sung by the most prolific singer of all time, I hope all th guess work on the number of songs by other singers will come to an end.

In one of my forthcoming articles, I will discuss this matter in detail.

Atul ji,
CHHUPA RUSTAM-1965,is indeed a hidden diamond in music.Hardly any reference is available anywhere. The so called ‘All inclusive’ internet sites are not even aware of it and but for your valuable find, this film might have never been brought to light.
However, not to worry.I have vivid memories of having seen this film as I was a fan of Azad,Dara Singh and the likes of them.I have my notes also on this film.
The king of Chandangarh, put 2 conditions before dying.1-Rajkumari can not interfere in the kingdom till she is 18 and 2) only a man who saves her from death can become Senapati of Chandangarh.
The Pradhan mantri,Pratap(Shaikh) wants to become the king with the help of Sambri(Maqbool),who only wants Gold.So Pratap’s men start looting citizen, but one young man Shyam(Azad)stands up against them.He becomes the masked ‘Chhupa Rustam’ and fights against the oppressors.(This is a story upside down of “Madama Zorro”,having the same killing combination of A class C grade movie-Chitra,Azad,Akku and,Bulo c Rani).
Shyam also Saves the Rajkumari (Chitra) from enemies and she makes him the Senapati.Pratap ,with help from dancer Ragini(Aruna) steals military plans and challenges Azad to get them in 8 days or get out.The Chhupa Rustam not only gets the Military plans but also gets the Rajkumari and the Kingdom,by eliminating Pratap and co.

Thanks for this great information on a movie whose existence itself is not known to even the “authentic” sites. We are so fortunate that you have not only watched the movie, you also have information about this movie to share with us.
