Music director Ajit Merchant is better known for his contributions to the Gujarati cinema and to the theatre world in Bombay. He did venture into the Hindi film world also, albeit his contribution is limited to less than 10 movies. Saperaa (1961) is one of the movies that Ajit Merchant composed music for. I have already discussed a wonderful Manna Dey solo from this movie, some days back. Here is another beautiful gem of a song from the same movie. This is a duet, that is rendered so lovingly by Manna Dey and Suman Kalyanpur. The lyrics are by Indeewar. The lead roles in this movie are played by Jyoti and Ranjan. Other actors in the film are Tiwari, Jeevnkala, Sunder, Uma Dutt, Neena, Rajan Kapoor etc.
Only the audio of the song is available, and one can only guess at how this is picturized online. The song is most probably picturized on Jyoti and Ranjan. The two appear to be separated, and the lover is looking at the moon and expressing his feelings that he is missing his beloved, that someone has taken away the moon from him. The beloved responds by reassuring that this separation is just a temporary phase and that no one can take away his moon from him.
The words are lovely, and melody of the composition will make you hum this song. All in all, a lovely grade A gem from a lesser known music composer. Enjoys this wonderful offering.

Thanks for the anecdotal information :).
Atul ji has posted another write up of mine on 12th July, for the wonderful song “Roop Tumhaara Aankhon Se Pee Loon” from the same movie.
I read in another article that Jagjit Singh, at a concert held probably last year in Mumbai, specially called Ajit Bhai on stage and honored him, acknowledging that Ajit Bhai was the first one to give him a real break in late 60s.

AJIT MERCHANT , who died recently (11-3-2011) at the age of 87 yrs.,was a very loveable person.’Ajitbhai’ as he was known in his circle was seen,till last year,taking a morning walk in Dadar Garden.
He gave music to 250 Gujarati,Hindi(7) and Marathi(2) movies and won many awards.He used to say that people’s love was his best award.
His neighbour in Dadar-West was Mukesh.Mukesh’s wife Saralaben(who had eloped with Mukesh at the age of 18 years and 7 days[she carried her birth certificate even in that moment] and got married in a Temple first and then in a regular way after things settled) was Gujarati and Merchant’s wife Nilamben were thick friends.
Mukesh sang few songs for him,in Hindi and Gujarati also.
Ajit bhai was a good Gazal writer and his gazal ” Raat khamosh hai ” is sung by Jagjit sing and is very popular.Jagjit sang this in almost every programme,on public demand !
