Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Maula Salim Chishti

Posted on: May 22, 2011

“Garm Hawaa” (1973) was a critically acclaimed movie of its time on a sensitive matter (lives and travails of Indian Muslims). It had Geeta Sidharth, Balraj Sahni, Jalal Agha, Farooq Sheikh etc in lead roles.

As can be expected, the movie failed at the box office. Music of the movie too failed to register with the public.

Here is a qawwali from this movie. I became aware of this qawwali only recently. It is sung by Aziz Ahmad Khan Warsi and chorus. Aziz Ahmad Khan Warsi himself is the music director as well. Kaifi Azmi is the lyricist. Prior to the song, Jalal Agha and Geeta Siddharth, who are in love with each other are shown together. Then the qawwali begins interspersed with shots of Geeta Siddharth, whose life is obviously a bed of thorns and she has given up on her life.

As the qawwali continues, Geeta Siddharth decides to take the extreme step of taking her own life.

Here is this qawwali, which is apparently a well known qawwali of its time, though I personally do not recall having listened to it at that time.

I have seen this movie long back on T. V. only. A few days ago when i saw this qawwali clip on youtube it all came back. This movie is known as M. S. Sathyu’s “Garam Hawa” who was the producer/director. It seems they ran out of money, all cast and crew pooled in to complete the film, i.e. what i have heard.

About the clip and the scene just before the song, Geeta is not too keen to marry Jalal Agha, as she still loves the cousin, who was here fiance. They couldnt get married as he moved to pakistan with part of the family. Geeta’s father Balraj Sahani refuses to migrate, stays back with his mother and family. Farooq Shaikh played the youger son and Shaukat Azmi(?) played Balraj Sahani’s wife.

With that anecdote about kabooter Jalal Agha is telling her that one fiance is already gone away, she may loose the second one too. She says “Doosre to nahin udne doongi” which she is agreeing to the proposal. She comes home and re-reads the letters written by her first fiance, as a sort of farewell with the decision to move on.

Then the clip has second part of the qawwali, when she finds out that Jalal Agha’s marriage is fixed to someone else. Unable to bear the betrayal she takes her own life.

The movie had many fine performances by Balraj Sahani , Geeta Siddharth, A. K. Hangal (small role) and other theatre artist’s . I think Ismat chugtai(?) played the role of Balraj Sahani’s ailing mother, who wants to die in the ancestral haveli, (which is allotted to A. K. Hangal as compensation for what he left behind in Pakistan). Eventually she is taken there to breath her last.

Regards.

I read that Kaifi Azmi won 3 Filmfare Awards for this film:
1. Best Lyricist
2. Best Dialogue (With Shama Zaidi)
3. Best Story (with Ismat Chugtai)
I have read this Youtube. I dont know how accurate this information is.

Deshmukh Sir,

Thanx for clarifying about the filmfare awards. Awards of 1974, which were declared and given in 1975. The movie must have released in 1974. I think the film must have won some more awards in other categories as well.

Another trivia about Kaifi Azmi is that he has acted in a few films too. One role which comes to mind is the one he played in “Naseem” which was shown on T. V. in the 90’s. He played the role of grandfather of the central protagonist Naseem who is a girl still in school.

Nahm bhai,
The film Garam Hawa won only 3 awards in 1974.No other award in any other category that year.
‘Kaifi’ Azmi never had any formal education in any school. He studied only in a Madarassa and was very proficient in Arabic,Persian and Urdu.
He acted in NASEEM (1995),which was based on the demolition of Babri Masjid.

Nahm bhai,
I remembered one more thing.
Azmi saab used to say,” I was born in Ghulam Hindusthan, living in Azad India, but will die in Socialist India”.
Thankfully,he died in 2002,in Independent,sovereign republic India !

Sir,

Since seeing your comment i was trying to remember what actually is happening in the movie”Naseem”. Now i have remembered, actually the movie ends with the news of demolition coming in and simultaneously the “janaaza” of Kaifi Azmi being taken out of the house/bldg.

About the communist leaning of that generation of poets and writers, all i can say is(my humble opinion) their dream of socialist India died long before Kaifi Azmi saab died.

Regards.
