Ab yaad na kar bhool jaa ae dil wo fasaanaa

on:The technology of recording Hindi movie songs in the earlier decades was not very advanced. It was not possible to use the same recording for both the movie as well as the record companies, so the same song was recorded twice- once for the movie sound track, and another time for the record company.
While recording the song twice, the artists remained same most of the time, but one could detect some minor differences in the two versions of the songs. Sometimes, the artists figuring in one version was different from the artists in the other version. Sometimes some of the instruments played in the two versions differed too.
There are cases in which the movie prints were lost due to natural calamities or accidents e.g. fires etc. In such cases, songs recorded on records were the only means of listening to these songs. Likewise, when the records of songs were not made (since the box office failure of the movie deterred record companies from making these records, or some other reasons), then movie sound track was the only source left for listening to these songs in case the prints of the movies survived.
Here is a song from an old movie called “Anokha Pyaar” (1948). We have access to two versions of the same song, one is the movie sound track version and another is the record version. It is just that I do not know which one is which version. So I prefer to identify these two versions by the names of the singers. One version has Mukesh and Meena Kapoor singing the song, whereas another version has Mukesh and Lata in it.
This movie had Dilip Kumar and Nargis in lead roles, so one can guess (in absence of the video) that this song was picturised o them.
PS-From the list of songs on myswar, I find that Mukesh-Meena Kapoor and Mukesh -Lata versions were mentioned as two songs, so it perhaps means that records of both versions were made.
Shams Azimabadi is the lyricist and music is composed by Anil Biswas.

ab yaad na kar bhool jaa ae dil wo fasaanaa
wo pyaar ki ghadiyaan
wo muhabbat kaa zamaanaa
ab yaad na kar
kyun yaad tujhe aati hain beeti huyi baaten
tu bhool jaa
tu bhool jaa
wo pyaar ke din
pyaar ki raaten
ab toot chukaa hai wo teraa khwaab suhaanaa
wo pyaar ki ghadiyaan
wo muhabbat kaa zamaanaa
ab yaad na kar
ae jhoomti lahraati huyi mast hawaaon
ae pyaare nazaaron rangeen fizaaon
tum jaake unhen aaj meraa haal sunaao
tum jaake unhen aaj meraa haal sunaao
kah do ke meraa dil hai tumhaaraa hi deewaanaa
kah do ke meraa dil hai tumhaaraa hi deewaanaa
hai pyaar ki ghadiyaan hai muhabbat ka zamaanaa
hai pyaar ki ghadiyaan
pyaar ki ghadiyaan
aatin hain mere kaanon mein ye kiski sadaayen
tum dil se khud hi poochh lo ham kyun ye bataayen
yaad aane lagaa
yaad aane lagaa
yaad aane lagaa
phir mujhe wo bhoolaa fasaanaa
wo pyaar ki ghadiyaan wo muhabbat kaa zamaanaa
wo pyaar ki ghadiyaan
pyaar ki ghadiyaan
aa jaa ke ab is dard bhare dil ko bhulaayen
armaanon ke gulshan mein naye phool khilaayen
ham tere hain dil teraa hai
ye bhool na jaana
ye bhool na jaanaa
ham tere hain dil teraa hai
ye bhool na jaana
bhool na jaanaa
ye bhool na jaanaa

Your comments about the old technolgy of those days is correct. However, this perticular song has a different history.
There were two heroins in this film with Dilip Kumar, namely Nargis and Nalini Jayawant. This song was initially recorded by all 3 artists,Mukesh,Lata and Meena Kapoor,Both the heroins getting one stanza each in the song in the film. While Meena Kapoor sang for Nargis,Lata gave her voice to Nalini Jayawant.
This was the first time Meena Kapoor sang for Anil Biswas, her future husband. They married each other in 1959 subsequently.
Anil Biswas decided to record two full versions separately for Lata and Meena and thus 2 different versions-Mukesh/Meena and Mukesh/Lata.
In the movie, however all 3 voices were used in one song, one stanza for each heroine.
