Toot gayaa haaye toot gayaa

Posted on: October 3, 2010

These days, I have been posting songs from “Magroor” (1950). So far I have posted three songs from this movie. One of them is a serious song, another is a romantic song and yet another is a light hearted song. All these songs are rare gems.

But that is not all. There are more classy compositions to follow.

The three compositions posted in this blog so far have been composed by Bulo C Rani. But this movie had another music director, viz the temperamental and highly talented Sajjad Hussain too. I have no idea why this movie had two music directors. A plausible explanation could be that Sajjad Hussain, known for his tiffs with influential persons, may have left the movie halfway and that may have necessitated signing up of another music director and Bulo C Rani was signed up.

Sajjad Hussain composed two songs in this movie. Here is the first of them. And what a song it is ! This is a pathos filled song, picturised on three heartbroken souls, viz Meena Kumari, Nigar Sultana and Rehman. This song is sung by Raj Kumari, Shamshad Begam and Rafi. Raja Mehdi Ali Khan, who wrote excellent light hearted songs as well as romantic songs in this movie, shows his versatility by coming up with this melancholic song.

I have listened to this song for the first time just now, and I am just floored. And I cannot help but feel that the Hindi movie music world was poorer because of lack of opportunities to Sajjad Hussain. Of course, Sajjad Hussain himself was to blame for it. His poor human relations skills meant that music lovers were deprived of Sajjad Hussain’s compositions and they had to be contented with less that 100 songs that Sajjad Hussain got to compose in his career lasting two decades.

In this blog, I have posted 15 songs composed by Sajjad Hussain from 5 movies. In all, he composed under 100 songs in 14 movies. I hope that with time I will be able to discuss most songs composed by him in this blog.

Here is the 16th song of Sajjad Hussain posted in this blog. Like the other songs, this song is a gem.

song-Toot gayaa haaye toot gayaa (Magroor) (1950) Singers-Rajkumari, Shamshad Begam, Rafi,Lyrics-Raja Mehdi Ali Khan, MD-Sajjad Hussain

Lyrics

Toot gayaa haaye toot gayaa
toot gayaa haaye toot gayaa
ye saaz e muhabbat toot gayaa
toot gayaa haaye toot gayaa
ham jisko samajhte thhey apna
maaloom nahin kyon roothh gayaa
toot gayaa haaye toot gayaa

rangeen ghataayen chhaayin thhin
rangeen ghataayen chhaayin thhin
mehmaan bahaarein aayin thhin
wo kaun khizaan ka jhonkaa thaa
jo saaraa gulshan loot gayaa
wo kaun khizaan ka jhonkaa thaa
jo saaraa gulshan loot gayaa
toot gayaa haaye toot gayaa

anjaam e muhabbat kyaa kahiye
is dil ki haalat kyaa kahiye
anjaam e muhabbat kyaa kahiye
is dil ki haalat kyaa kahiye
ik dil ?? likhi ???
ik taaraa thaa jo toot gayaa
ik dil ?? likhi ???
ik taaraa thaa jo toot gayaa
toot gayaa haay toot gayaa

kismat ke sataaye baithhe hain
kismat ke sataaye baithhe hain
ik chot si khaaye baithe hain
jo daaman hamne thhaamaa thha
wo daaman hamse chhoot gayaa
jo daaman hamne thhaamaa thha
wo daaman hamse chhoot gayaa
toot gayaa haaye toot gayaa
wo saaz e muhabbat toot gayaa
toot gayaa haaye toot gayaa

I am hard-core fan of Sajjad Hussain’s work and keeps track of most of his songs. But this was a surprise revealtion by you that he was one of the composer for this movie . Thanks.
Your observation of his temperament for not being the sole Composer of this movie is very right.K.Asif’s Dilip Kumar-Nargis starred Hulchal of 1951 is another example of this, which he left blaming too much interference by the producer in his work. The remaining work was later completed by Mohmmad Shafi.
Looking forward for his second composition for this movie.

There is another Sajjad Hussain composition from this movie but unfortunately this song is missing from youtube and other sources. This song “tumhe baagon mein saawan mein nazaare yaad karte hain” may be available in audio form with some song collectors. I request them to share this gem with us. Unless I have access to this song, I will be unable to discuss this song here.
