Badi bhool huyi tujhe pyaar kiyaa

on:I became aware of this movie called “Magroor” (1950) thanks to its review by Memsaab. This is a delightful movie, and it is worth watching even for someone like me who cannot normally sit through the length of an entire Hindi movie.
As a tribute to this movie, I felt like discussing a few songs from this movie. Here is a song from this movie. This song is as rare as the movie itself. This song, which is picturised on Nigar Sultana is not sung by any well known singer. Rather, it is sung by a female singer named only as Mrs Vishnilal. She apparently was a relative of the makers of this movie. She apparently entertained the wish of being a playback singer in Hindi movies but she was allowed to do so by her husband for only one movie. And this happens to be the only movie where she got to sing as a playback singer.
This song is picturised as a sad song. Rehman has a tiff with Nigar Sultana and he leaves in a huff, and that prompts Nigar Sultana to express her dismay through this melancholic song.
The song is written by Raja Mehdi Ali Khan. This movie apparently had more than one music director. This song is credited to Bulo C Rani.

Song-Badi bhool huyi tujhe pyaar kiyaa (Magroor) (1950) Singer-Mrs Vishnilal, Lyrics- Raja Mehdi Ali Khan, MD-Bulo C Rani
Lyrics
ik sapna suhaanaa dekh liyaa
kyaa khel thaa chaand sitaaron kaa
ab aake dekho bedard zaraa
kyaa haal hai pyaar ke maaron kaa
badi bhool huyi tujhe pyaar kiyaa
badi bhool huyi tujhe pyaar kiyaa
tere pyaar ka kyun aitbaar kiyaa
badi bhool huyi tujhe pyaar kiyaa
munh mod ke yoon hi jaanaa thaa
kyun apna mujhe banaaya thaa
gar shauq rulaane ka thaa tujhe
kyun hansna mujhe sikhaayaa thaa
badi bhool huyi tujhe pyaar kiyaa
ye jeena bhi koi jeena hai
tum door raho main door rahoon
kyaa pyaar isi ko kehte hain
jo milne se mazboor rahoon
kyun waayda kiyaa tod diyaa
ikraar karke inkaar kiyaa
badi bhool huyi tujhe pyaar kiyaa
badi bhool huyi tujhe pyaar kiyaa
tujhe pyaar kiyaa
tujhe pyaar kiyaa

Our pal Sajjad Hussain composed 2 songs from this apparently 🙂 And you have found out far more about Mrs Vishnilal than I ever would have…but this film is a gem. Love it.
