on:Piano songs became very popular in Hindi movies in late 1940s. So popular in fact that they continued to remain popular in Hindi movies till 1970s.
Elsewhere I had described Piano songs in great detail. It goes like this:
Every Hindi movie character, be a prince or pauper will live in a palatial house which will have a huge hall on the ground floor big enough to hold a football match. That hall will have a big stair case leading to the first floor. Adjacent to the staircase, a grand piano would be kept.
Get together parties would be held in that big hall. On that occasion, the hero would be asked to sing a song. And he would choose this occasion to be seated on the piano and sing a love song addressed to the heroine, and she would rightly feel embarrassed by this public attention.
Sometimes, when the hero is sad, he will not need any invitation. He will himself go to the grand piano, be seated there and start singing a sad song on it. His singing late at night would righly wake up his mother sleeping upstairs, who would then come down from the big stairs to enquire what was going on.
Here is an archtypical sad piano song sung alone in the above recommended manner. Premnath is the piano singer and I must say that he comes up with a memorable dard bhara naghma. Rajinder Krishan has written a gem of a song which has been sung with his customary elan by Mukesh. Anil Biswas, a music director extraordinaire has composed the music.
Here is this superb “piano” song from “Aaraam” (1951).

song-Ae jaane jigar dil mein samaane aajaa (Aaraam) (1951) Singer-Mukesh, Lyrics-Rajinder Krishan, MD-Anil Biswas
Lyrics
ae jaan-e-jigar
dil mein samaane aa jaa
ae jaan-e-jigar
dil mein samaane aa jaa
ujdi huyi basti ko basaane aa jaa
ae jaan-e-jigar
dil dard se betaab hai
o jaan-e-tamannaa
aaraam kaa
paigaam sunaane aa jaa
aaraam kaa
paigaam sunaane aa jaa
ae jaan-e-jigar
parwaanaa badi der se
hai aas lagaaye
ai shammaa
na kar der
jalaane aa jaa
ai shammaa
na kar der
jalaane aa jaa
ae jaan-e-jigar
tarsi huyi nazron ko hai
deedaar ki hasrat
barkhaa ki tarah
pyaas bujhaane aajaa
barkhaa ki tarah
pyaas bujhaane aajaa
ae jaan-e-jigar
dil mein samaane aajaa
ae jaan-e-jigar
dil mein samaane aajaa
ujdi huyi basti ko basaane aa jaa
ae jaan-e-jigar

Thanks for sharing. I’ve never heard this one before. The music is so lovely and so is the voice of Mukesh. Beautiful and touchy lyrics.
I almost couldn’t recognize Prem Nath.
