Kabootar aajaa aajaa re

Posted on: December 8, 2009

“Manglaa” (1950) was the second Hindi movie made by Gemini pictures, who till then were mainly producers of South Indian language movies. Like in their earlier effort, this movie too was made in Tamil and then dubbed into Hindi. The songs however were re recorded using singers and lyricists of Hindi movies.

Here is a song sung by Geeta Dutt and picturised nicely on P Bhanumati. Pt Indra was the lyricist. This movie had as many as three music directors. M D Parthsarthy, E Shankar Shastry and B S Kalla were the three music directors. This song was composed by E Sankar Sastry.

Song-Kaboota aaja aaja re (Manglaa) (1950) Singer-Geeta Dutt, Lyrics-Pt Indra, MD-E S Sastry

Lyrics

o ho ho ho ho ho ho ho ho
o ho ho ho ho ho ho ho ho

mere dil ki duniya meethe sapnon ki
mere dil ki duniya meethe sapnon ki
kab aaye sapnon ka raja
hoho ho ho

kab aaye sapnon ka raja
mera manwaa kyaa bole
kyun ang ang dole
o udne waale saathi
o aaja re
gaganon ke o raja re
aaja re
kabootar aajaa

Delightful old song and one that I had never heard before. Also liked your writeup –the picturization does have a south Indian feel to it.

Gemini pictures introduced a different flavour to the kind of movies Hindi movie watchers were used to. And movie watchers liked these movies.

I call South Indian movies as “Chandamama” movies. “Chandamama” was a popular children’s magazine published in several Indian languages and the story in the magazine were similar to the stories of these South Indian movies. In fact, the owners of “Chandamama” were into producing movies too.
