Gore gore haathon mein mehandi rachaa ke

Posted on: October 31, 2009

I have listened to this song in the past, but that was when I was not paying attention and when I was unaware about the details of this song.

Now I know that this song is from “Parineeta” (1953). And what a melodious song it is ! It is sung by Asha Bhonsle and chorus. Bharat Vyas is the lyricist and Arun Kumar Mukherji is the music director.

The lyrics make it a wedding song, though it is not picturised as such. A few girls are singing this song to their dolls. Of course playing with dolls in Bollywood movies typically means marrring these dolls off, and the girls are seen singing songs of the same genre. In any case, this song must be regarded as one of the iconic wedding songs that have been come out of Bollywood movies.

I can identify Meena Kumari, but apart from that I am not aware who the other artists are in this picturisation.

Song-Gore gore haathon me mehandi rachaa ke (Parineeta) (1953) Singer-Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Bharat Vyas, MD-Arun Kumar Mukherji

Lyrics

gore gore haathon me mehandi rachaa ke

ho o o
hansti rahogi tum preetam ke naam se
preetam ke naam se ji
preetam ke naam se
thak ke jo aaye wo din bhar ke kaam se
din bhar ke kaam se ji
din bhar ke kaam se
pankha jhalogi
pankha jhalogi to soye aaraam se
sapno me unke dheere se aana
moti ki ladiyaan daal ke
chalo dulhaniya piya se milne
chhota sa ghoonghat nikaal ke
chhota sa ghoonghat nikaal ke

ho piya ke sang sakhi meethi meethi bolna
meethi meethi bolna ji
meethi meethi bolna
ho
nayan gori dheere dheere dolna
dheere dheere dolna ji
dheere dheere dolna
gussa karen wo zubaan nahin kholnaa
gussa karen wo zubaan nahin kholnaa
man ke mandir me rakhnaa
nainon ke deepak ujaal ke
chalo dulhaniya piya se milne
chhota sa ghoonghat nikaal ke
chhota sa ghoonghat nikaal ke
gore gore haathon me mehandi rachaa ke
nainon mein kajra daal ke
chalo dulhaniya piya se milne
chhota sa ghoonghat nikaal ke
chhota sa ghoonghat nikaal ke

Why would MD record same song by two singers and then use just one for the movie? Sadanand ji, can you please clarify this confusion of mine? Thanks.

In those days, there were instances where HMV would record some popular songs in the voice of some other popular singers. Example : ‘chal ud jaa re panchh’ which was sung by Rafi for the film version but record version was sung by Talat Mehmood. Since these led to some unhealthy comparisons, I think, all the major singers of that time came together and decided not to do version songs outside the films.

I am sure Arun will have more to add to this.

Wise decision by smart singers. Thanks Sadanandji.

My belief is that first producers/directors would allow the music director the freedom to pick singers of their likings and later on buckle under the pressure from actors and financiers. For example, using the example from this blog itself:

Ek chaand aasmaan pe hai

“Naushad, the music director got the song recorded (for the record company) in the voices of Rafi (for Dilip Kumar) and Talat Mehmood( for Manoj Kumar). But when the song was to be recorded for the sound track, Manoj Kumar remonstrated with Naushad with the plea that Mahendra Kapoor should sing for him. Naushad was forced to bow down and he recorded the song for movie sound track in the voices of Rafi and Mahendra Kapoor.”

This has been going on for a while. Another example is, when Anuradha Paudwal became powerful with T-Series connection in early 90s, Anand-Milind were forced to re-record songs with Anuradha which were earlier recorded with Alka Yagnik. That led to Alka Yagnik not singing for Anand-Milind for 2 yrs until they patched up. Similarly, I dont remember the movie name, but during the same period, Anuradha Paudwal managed to do the same to even Lata Mangeshkar, and I cant recall any other instance when such thing ever happened to Lataji.

Kamath ji/Khyati ji,
Version songs can be for various reasons.
1.When the original singer is not available for commercial recording, another singer is used to record the song.e.g.Ashok kumar singing Dheere dheere aa re in the film, but the record was done by Arun kumar, his cousin.
2.When the assigned singer is busy, another singer is used to record the song and later the original singer’s track is added.
3.When the original singer is sick/not available
4.for some special occasions/purpose songs are sung by other singers,e.g.Lata singing Saigal songs for ‘Shradhanjali’. etc

Dekho Arunji, aap ne kitni aasani se ye samja diya. Yehi to baat hai aap mein. Aaj kal to “Guru” bhi aise mite hai jo aap ko Abhimanyu ke saat kothe ki tarah ghere mein daal dete hai ki aap ko bahar nikal ne ka raasts hi na mile.
One more question Arunji. Is Madan Mohan’s song maayi ri main kaase kahun……from Dastak had the same reason? I haven’t seen the movie, so pata nahin ki movie mein us ka version hai ke nahin. Thanks Arunji.

Khyati ji,
As far as my knowledge goes, ths song of Dastak, which you mentioned was very much in the film and I dont think there is any Version record of this song by any singer.

One instance I know is for film “Betaab”. All the songs were supposed to be by Lata and Kishore. But KK was abroad for some stage show. As shooting was scheduled, R. D. Burman recorded the songs with Lata and Shabbir Kumar. The plan was to re-record songs portion in Kishore ‘s voice later on.

Shabbir Kumar was a Rafi clone and singing in various orchestra’s. This was an opportunity of a life time for him. Eventually the songs turned out so well that the voice of Shabbir Kumar was retained for the film. ‘Betaab” was debut film of Sunny deol and Amrita singh.

Nahm, are you talking about the hit song Jab ham jawaan honge ……? As I was “grown up”, I was allowed to watch this movie in theater.

Like

yes . ‘Jab ham jawaan honge’, badal yun barasta hai, and the rest of songs from” Betaab”. It is raining in Mumbai, may be this rain songs needs to be posted.

Lekin main ne socha thha ke shayad , 31st July tak Mohammed Rafi sahab ki 1600 songs to ho sakte thhe blog mein. But it is not looking possible now. Any way the rate Rafi’s songs in the blog is slow. What do you think ? Can we persuade Atul ji to post 4 songs a day for next eight days, & then 7songs on 30th and 8 songs on 31st.

Like

Nahm,
Do you have a degree in Math/stats (statistics)? Recently I am watching you (what?) that you are behind numbers.
Aapka sujaav bura nahin hai. Lekin bahut risky hai. To persuade Atulji for posting these many songs of just one singer in ten days? Darti hoon ki meri pitaayi karne wo USA na chale aaye 😆 (Usko USA bulaane ke liye ye idea bura nahin hai. Aur itna risk to le hi sakti hoon. kam se kam unke darshan to ho jayege na. 🙂 ) Let me be serious (really?) Agar hum sab milke uski madad karde to shaayad ho sakta hai. You, Sadanandji, Rajaji & Sudhirji are too good to write post, so that way Atulji doesn’t need to worry about writing info part. I can do few too. Prakashji, Atifji & Nitinji are there too.
Atulji, can our wish be fulfilled just for our beloved Rafi Sahab? Please.

As nahm said, attaining 1600 songs of Rafi on his death anniversary looks difficult. Today, most of Mukesh’ songs would be discussed on his birth anniversary. There may be many more anniversaries in the pipe lines till July 31st.

But we all have to take into consideration whether in trying to achieve Rafi’s 1600 songs by July 31st, are we not sacrificing the varieties of songs to be discussed in terms of singers?

My suggestion would be that let us enjoy Rafi songs in this blog like sipping a glass of wine rather than gulping it. Let the figure of 1600 be reached in the usual process.

Like

Kamath ji and khyati ji,

My intention was just that the centuries get completed a bit quicker than the current rate. I know that July is full of birthdays and anniversaries. I dont know what occassions are remaining in this month. But it is not impossible to find Rafi songs to celebrate any of them, except other singers birthdays and anniversaries. Even for singers, duets are possible.

Any way, let us hope 1600 gets done by 31st August at least 😉 .

Anuradha Paudhwal sang Alka yagnik`s song in Dil(1990-Aamir Khan,Madhuri Dixit starrer- I think song is Suresh wadkar,Alka yagnik Duet “O piya piya, kyon bhulaa diya/main teri piyaa,…bewaffa yaa bereham, kyaa kahoon tujhe sana, toone dil toda hai, bhool kya huyee ye bataa jaa)

And in Lata`s case, If I am not wrong, I remember at that time,Anuradha sang one song from Aapke saath(1986) which was originally sung by Lata ji. I heard from Radio station the Anuradha song and Lata song. I don`t know they are version songs or ????(Picturised on Smita Patil-“Zind le gaya woh dil ka jaani”-Laxmikant pyarelal)

At that time, I think there is a unwritten rule that music cassette of every movie released through super cassettes/T.Series(and most of the music released at that time were released through t.series, because of their fierce publicity network and very low price of cassettes), must have Anuradha Paudhwal`s playback voice.

If at all any movie had Lata or Asha`s voice, the music of that movie was not marketed at all by the company and that thing I observed very minutely, at that time.
(example:Raj Khosla`s Naqab(1989-Rishi,Farha starrer-which has got very good compositions of Kamal Maqdoom sung By Asha Bhosle), Rajesh Khanna`s Anokha Rishtha(asha),Kumar Gaurav`s Jurrat(Asha & lata) Dacait(R.D.Burman)Ek Naya Rishta(Rekha)Pyar kiya hai Pyar Karenge(Laxmipyare)Hifazat(Anil Kapoor-R.dBurman)Tadap(RDBurman-shelved)Mahadeva(Ilayaraja-Vinod Khanna)and many more

Anuradha paudhwal`s version songs of Lataji`s songs(especially those Lata sand for Madan mohanji)were marketed fiercely.

Prakashji,

I havent heard about Aap Ke Saath song version by Anuradha, cause both in the movie and in the audio, its Lataji’s voice. I could be wrong, but I would think it might be some song from 90s, cause T-Series started flying high after Laal Dupatta Malmal Ka around 88-89. So Anuradha gained all that power after that.

Regarding Dil-1990, I think all 4 songs by Anuradha were sung by Alka, not just one song. And that probably created a big fight between Alka and Anand-Milind.

Ahh..
Whether you are talking about music of Radha ka sangam,I remember similar controversy cropped up regarding the songs from Radha Ka sangam(1992)(govinda,Juhi Chawla Starrer:music by Anu Mallik-Govinda`s home production) I am also not very sure about that.

And One song from Dil (Hamne ghar choda hai)I heard in the voice of Sadhna sargam(with Udit) also.

But I have heard Aapke saath- Anuradha version from Bombay vividhbharthi station. That`s sure.

Prakashji,

u r right about Radha Ka Sangam :

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anuradha_Paudwal
-This explains in detail under Controversy section.

Yes, Dil has 1 song from Sadhana, and other 4 by Alka.

Regarding Aap Ke Saath, I’m assuming it might be the reverse story, where Anuradha sang it before and then it got Lataji’s voice. It would be nice to find Anuradha’s version.

Haan blufire ji

Thanks for this view point

Ye ho saktha hai,
In many movies, if 2 or 3 lines of any famous song(Later picutrised fully in Lata`s voice) are picturised seperately, those lines I have heard in Anuradha`s voice. (especially in movies where music was provided by Laxmikant Pyarelal)

Must be if lataji is busy, then at first a song must have been recorded in Anuradha`s voice(then a budding junior artiste-wife of arranger cum music director of Arun Paudhwal) under the baton of her favourite Laxmi Pyare))and later they must have been re recorded in Lata`s voice and picturised on the screen fully.
At the given point, I remember in Rajesh khanna & Zeenat`s Movie “Aashique Hoon Bhaaron ka”(Laxmi Pyare) Lata sang one beautiful song “Mere gore gaalon ka,reshami gaalon ka, rang pheekha pad gaya”,
When that song ends and Zeenath comes to her house uttering again the mukhda of that song(without orchesta) to herself , I have identified that voice as Anuradha`s voice.

I have read somewhere that in those days, there is a practice of first recording the songs in Junior artiste`s voice and those demo tapes will be be sent to Lataji for her practice.

Thanks again
Regards
Prakash

Prakashji,

ur right about the fact that Anuradhaji sung many songs as version songs explained by Arunji in earlier post, and those were ultimately recorded in Lataji’s voice. If u read Alka Yagnik’s biography/details, she says that she was given the option of either waiting for a few years or start right away by singing these version songs by Laxmikant-Pyarelal, and she chose to wait for a few years until her voice was considered matured (she did sung for KA meanwhile for Lawaris, etc). So using a junior artiste to do version songs was indeed the practice. But if it is the same song sung by 2 major stars, for example, Geetaji and Asha for above song or Talat/Mahendra from Aadmi, etc, my guess would be it would be b/c of pressure from people holding the money beg. Typically, a major singer would sing a song of another major singer for Shradhanjali, etc.

Regards.
