Caravan guzar gaya gubaar dekhte rahe

Posted on: July 5, 2009

Songs have the ability of change the mood of the listeners. There are songs that are uplifting, there are songs that are soothing, there are songs that makes one feel romantic.

Then there are sad songs. I have mentioned in the past that sad songs come in many shades. They may be about minor disappointment or they could be about bigger tragedies.

Here is one of the most melancholic songs created in Bollywood. In fact, there are people who say that such songs are depressing. Yes, such songs can be depressing, but these songs should not be taken to heart. They should only be listened to/ watched only in the context of the movie.

This song is sung by Rafi. Thoough most people will guess one of the major shayars of that time to be the author of this song, this song is in fact written by a newcomer, viz Neeraj. Music is composed by Roshan. The movie is “Nai Umar Ki Nai Fasal” (1965).

Song-Caravan guzar gaya gubaar dekhte rahe (Nai Umar Ki Nai Fasal) (1965) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Neeraj, MD-Roshan

Lyrics

swapn jhare phool se
meet chubhe shool se
mit gaye singaar sabhi
baagh ke babool se
aur ham khade khade bahaar dekhte rahe
caravan guzar gaya gubaar dekhte rahe

paanv jab talaq uthe ke zindagi fisal gayi
paat paat jhad gaye ke shaakh-shaakh jal gayi
chaah to nikal saki na tar umar nikal gayi
tar umar nikal gayi
geet ashk ban gaye, swapn ho dafan gaye
saath ke sabhi diye, dhuaan pahan-pahan gaye
aur ham jhuke-jhuke, mod par ruke-ruke
umr ke chadhaav kaa utaar dekhte rahe

kyaa shabaab thaa ke phool phool pyaar kar uthaa
kyaa kamaal thaa ke dekh aainaa sihar uthaa
is taraf zameen aur aasmaan udhar uthaa
thaam kar jigar uthaa ke jo milaa nazar uthaa
ke jo milaa nazar uthaa
ek din magar yahan aisi kuch hawa chali
lut gayi kali kali ke ghut gayi gali gali
aur ham lute-lute, waqt se pite-pite
saaz ki sharaab kaa khumaar dekhte rahe
caravan guzar gaya gubaar dekhte rahe

haath the mile ke zulf chaand ki sanwaar doon
honth the khule ke har bahaar ko pukaar doon
dard thaa diyaa gayaa ke har dukhi ko pyaar doon
aur saans yoon ke swarg, bhoomi par utaar doon
bhoomi par utaar doon
ho sakaa na kuchh magar, shaam ban gayi sahar
wo uthi lahar ke dhah gaye kile bikhar bikhar
aur ham dare dare, neer nain mein bhare
odh kar kafan pade mazaar dekhte rahe

maang bhar chali ke ek jab nayi nayi kiran
dhol ke dhunak uthi thumak uthe charan charan
shor mach gayaa ke lo chali dulhan chali dulhan
gaanv sab umad padaa, bahak uthe nayan nayan
bahak uthe nayan nayan
par tabhi zahar bhari gaaz ek wah giri
punch gaya sindoor taar taar huyi chunri
aur ham azaan se door ke makaan se
paalki liye huye kahaar dekhte rahe
caravan guzar gaya gubaar dekhte rahe
swapn jhare phool se
meet chubhe shool se
lut gaye singaar sabhi
baagh ke babool se
aur ham khade khade bahaar dekhte rahe
caravan guzar gaya gubaar dekhte rahe

Fantastic song – in its genre !!!
Thanks for posting this farmaish, Atul.
This song gives me goose-pimples whenever I listen to it. Rafi saab’s ability to convey any mood you want was just brilliant. The mood here was “hopelessness” – and see how he has done that !!!

Btw, maybe you missed some lines in your lyrics ?
Could you just check out the lines after
“shor mach gayaa ke lo chali dulhan chali dulhan
gaanv sab umda padaa, bahak uthe nayan nayan
bahak uthe nayan nayan”

I noticed this particularly because this is my favourite stanza – this one stuck with me when I first heard this song when I was about 17. 🙂

Thanks again for posting this.

I posted words as I heard from the video and that video was incomplete. And I provided a different link which was complete.

I have now listened to the audio of the song, and indeed the lines you mention are there in the audio. Then I listened to the video from the link I have provided, and the same lines were indeed there. So while my readers were listening to the full song, I myself had written down the song from an incomplete video. How ironic ! Now I have corrected the lyrics.

Though melanccholic , yet the poetry of Neeraj reached great heights . The poetry depicts the saga of an unsuccessful person , who wanted to do many things in his life but could do a little due to unfavourable conditions prevailent then . ” Ho sakaa na kuchh magar shaam ban gayi sahar .” I have gone through complete video song . The song is picturized on some Rajeev and Tanuja is shown occasionally , especially during ” taar taar hui chunari ” .Long live
Neerajji with better health .

Though melancholic , todays generation may call it song with a negative idea , yet the poetry of Neerajji scales a great height . Thanks to Maskalandr , I have gone through the complete video .

Top-class poetry that describes the pain of missed opportunities.

Gopaldas ‘Neeraj’ first selects aot words to convey the meaning and then commands them to fit into a position best suited for the stanza. Only ‘Neeraj’ ji knows to convey such a sorrow in lyrics.
