Yesterday was 15th august, the independence day of India, and today, the very next day, is another important festival of India, namely Rakhi or rakshabandhan. As far as Bollywood songs are concerned, there are quite a few Rakhi songs that have made their mark. But this song, perhaps the oldest one, continues to set the benchmark, and this benchmark is yet to be bettered.
So enjoy this fabulous rakhi song sung by Lata. Lyrics are by Shailendra and music is by Shankar Jaikishan. The movie is Chhoti Behan ( 1959). wow, they do not make songs like this now a days.
It turns out that this song has a second version too. If the well known happy version comes towards the beginning of the movie then the sombre sadder version comes towards the end of the movie. In the happier version, Nanda, playing the title role, ties us rakhi on the wrists of Balraj Sahni and Rehman, her brothers. As the song ends, Mehmood, her cousin arrives, eager to get rakhi tied up on his wrist as well.
Much water flows under the bridge since. Rehman gets married and his wife helps create a rift in the family, so much so that Nanda and Balraj Sahni are thrown out of their house by Rehman, who conveniently forgets that it was the support of Balraj Sahni during his struggling days that had helped him get settled in his life.
The sadder version of the song shows Nanda (having lost her eyesight) only having Balraj Sahni with her and she ties rakhi on his wrist.

True. She looks cute and young. This movie must have been one of the earlier movies of her career.

Thanks for also posting the second (sad) version of this song, which is not available as a separate published record. This version of the song is only available in the film on video.
However, a little clarification. The two stanzas in the second version are not contiguous in the film. The person who has posted this online has joined two separate clips from the film and presented it as a single song. In reality, these two clips appear at separate times in the film. Hence, in all this song appears three times in the film.
The first time is the happy version, where all the family is together and the Raakhi festivals is celebtrated in happiness.
After this first appearance of the song many events happen. The younger brother Shekhar (Rehman) completes his studies. He gets married to Sheela (Shyama). The marriage of Meena (Nanda) is fixed, but three days before her wedding, she has an accident in which she loses her eyesight. The marriage is called off. On the domestic front, usual irritants appear. There is a falling out between the brothers and Shekhar leaves home to go and stay in his father-in-law’s house.
At this juncture, the song appears for the second time. This time on Raakhi festival, only the elder brother (Balraj Sahni) is present. The song plays in the background, and only one stanza, “Baandh Ke Hamne Resham Dori”, is played.
Subsequently, more events happen. The family home had been mortgaged, and the moneylender (Radhakishan, who is actually a relative and father of Mehmood) forces the family to leave the home. The family gets separated. There are many twists and turns – Shekhar and his father-in-law lose all their wealth in horse racing; Meena meets the doctor (Shailesh Kumar), to whom she was originally supposed to get married before losing her eyesight; Meena meets with another accident and is hospitalized; then one by one all the family members are joined together. Meena and the doctor are married, and they fly off to a foreign country to get Meena’s eyes operated upon. This is the last scene of the film
At this juncture, song appears for the third time. Once again, the song is played in background, and only one stanza, “Behan Paraye Des Basi Ho”, is played.

In 1959 when this film was released it had created a storm in our small native town. People of all age group had thronged to the local theatre where it was playing. This particular song was on the lips of everyone.It won’t be exaggeration to say that this song gave a meaning to the theme of Rakshabandhan . Even to this day it remains on the top of the chart of Rakhi songs and will ever remain so. Such is the beauty of this marvellous song.
