Iss rang badalti duniya mein

Posted on: January 27, 2009

Here is yet another Rafi-Shammi Kapoor song which is sung and picturised with the same passion which we have come to associate with such songs. Hasrat Jaipuri is the lyricist and Shankar Jaikishan are the music director, as was the case in majority of such songs.

Sadhana is also there in the picturisation, and she does not get to sing in the song. The picturisation of a solo song on a pair of actors is always interesting to watch. The person who is supposed to keep quite in the song always needs to communicate with his/her body language in such songs. In case it is a lady who needs to keep quite is required to blush, fidget, get annoyed, get mollified etc as the song progresses. And watching her expression in this song is just as much fun as watching the hero, our irrepressible Shammi Kapoor.

Song-Iss rang badalti duniya me (Raj Kumar) (1964) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Hasrat Jaipuri, MD-Shankar Jaikishan

Lyrics

Iss rang badalti duniya me
insaan ki neeyat theek nahin
nikla na karo tum sajdhaj kar
imaan ki neeyat theek nahin
Iss rang badalti duniya me
insaan ki neeyat theek nahin
nikla na karo tum sajdhaj kar
imaan ki neeyat theek nahin
Iss rang badalti duniya me

ye di hai bada hi deewana
cheda na karo iss paagal ko
ye di hai bada hi deewana
cheda na karo iss paagal ko
tumse na shararat kar baithe
nadan ki neeyat theek nahin
Iss rang badalti duniya me
insaan ki neeyat theek nahin
nikla na karo tum sajdhaj kar
imaan ki neeyat theek nahin
Iss rang badalti duniya me

Kandhe se hataalo sar apna
ye pyaar mohabbat rahne do
Kandhe se hataalo sar apna
ye pyaar mohabbat rahne do
kashti ko sambhalo maujon se
toofaan ki neeyat theek nahin
Iss rang badalti duniya me
insaan ki neeyat theek nahin
nikla na karo tum sajdhaj kar
imaan ki neeyat theek nahin
Iss rang badalti duniya me

main kaise Khuda haafiz kah doon
mujhko to kisi ka yakeen nahin
main kaise Khuda haafiz kah doon
mujhko to kisi ka yakeen nahin
chup jaao hamari ankhon me
Bhagwan ki neeyat theek nahin
Iss rang badalti duniya me
insaan ki neeyat theek nahin
nikla na karo tum sajdhaj kar
imaan ki neeyat theek nahin
Iss rang badalti duniya me

Translation (Provided by Raja)

Iss rang badalti duniya me
In this world of changing colours

insaan ki neeyat theek nahin
Man’s intentions cannot be trusted

nikla na karo tum sajdhaj kar
You don’t go out there all decked up

imaan ki neeyat theek nahin
Even decency cannot be trusted

Iss rang badalti duniya me
In this world of changing colours

insaan ki neeyat theek nahin
Man’s intentions cannot be trusted

nikla na karo tum sajdhaj kar
You don’t go out there all decked up

imaan ki neeyat theek nahin
Even decency cannot be trusted

Iss rang badalti duniya me
In this world of changing colours

ye di hai bada hi deewana
This heart is quite crazy

cheda na karo iss paagal ko
Don’t play with this this mad heart

ye di hai bada hi deewana
This heart is quite crazy

cheda na karo iss paagal ko
Don’t play with this mad heart

tumse na shararat kar baithe
It may just tease you back

nadan ki neeyat theek nahin
Can’t quite trust this innoncent heart

Iss rang badalti duniya me
In this world of changing colours

insaan ki neeyat theek nahin
Man’s intentions cannot be trusted

nikla na karo tum sajdhaj kar
You don’t go out there all decked up

imaan ki neeyat theek nahin
Even decency cannot be trusted

Iss rang badalti duniya me
In this world of changing colours

Kandhe se hataalo sar apna
Get that head off your shoulder

ye pyaar mohabbat rahne do
Let this love be

Kandhe se hataalo sar apna
Get this head off you shoulder

ye pyaar mohabbat rahne do
Let this love be

kashti ko sambhalo maujon se
Steer the boat from the waves

toofaan ki neeyat theek nahin
The storm cannot be trusted

Iss rang badalti duniya me
In this world of changing colours

insaan ki neeyat theek nahin
Man’s intentions cannot be trusted

nikla na karo tum sajdhaj kar
You don’t go out there all decked up

imaan ki neeyat theek nahin
Even decency cannot be trusted

Iss rang badalti duniya me
In this world of changing colours

main kaise Khuda haafiz kah doon
How can I say goodbye

mujhko to kisi ka yakeen nahin
I just don’t trust anybody

main kaise Khuda haafiz kah doon
How can I say goodbye

mujhko to kisi ka yakeen nahin
I just don’t trust anybody

chup jaao hamari ankhon me
Hide yourself in my eyes

Bhagwan ki neeyat theek nahin
Even God cannot be trusted

Iss rang badalti duniya me
In this world of changing colours

insaan ki neeyat theek nahin
Man’s intentions cannot be trusted

nikla na karo tum sajdhaj kar
You don’t go out there all decked up

imaan ki neeyat theek nahin
Even decency cannot be trusted

Iss rang badalti duniya me
In this world of changing colours

What a lovely song this is !
I love the nuances Rafi saab brings to this song.
Even if you close your eyes and just listen to the song, you cannot but love it.

True. One can enjoy this song without watching the picturisation. In fact, that is how most people must have enjoyed this song over the decades- by just listening to the audio.

I wondered if anyone could be so kind to post an English translation for us ignorant non-hindi speaking. The song is so great, but I often wonder what he is saying. I realize the poetry will get lost in the translation.

What a classic Shammi ji characterisation! He always had that look of innocence which can’t be found in any other actor. Everyone is very full of themselves on screen! I wonder how Shammi ji managed to maintain a look of innocence. Always a humble person I guess.

Sir,
I and my wife are very fond of Good Old Songs of th Hindi Cinema of that Golden Era (i.e. upto say abut 1969). Shammi Kapoor is one Idol who has displyed romantic scenes in very rich way of real ‘Bhartiya’ tradition, truly showing love between man and woman with clear intenstion of ultimately marrying. He has earned name and a special place with we all elders who were very young those days. I wish, today’s young artists should learn the lessons of utmost restraint when they have to display ‘Love Scenes’. The ‘Attire’ which the ‘Hero’ and the ‘Heroine’ or all othe characters were in Films is the only thing which the youngsters emulate and the entire Society’s tastes get developped accordingly. For a ‘Female’ dispaly of her beauty is possible in pure Indian Style also. ‘Desirable Love Scenes of Hero and heroine’, Beautiful Attire of the Heroine and other supporitng Female Characters, Good Melodious, Romantic Songs with Excellent Poetic themes contributed by Esteemd Lyricists, Exceptional Music from Great Music Directors and Musicians; all these things had the perfect combinatin in all Films of Shammi Kapoor. I sincerely pray for Good Health for Shammi Kapoor and all well for his family. I must remeber Geeta Bali also in my message. I pay repect for that great departed artist also.

I thank you for your detailed post.

Indeed, the songs and dances of today that we are subjected to are no patch on the songs of the golden era.

Would someone tell me what is the mood of this song. Some rate it in romantic songs category but the lyrics do no suggest so. Besides the notes used in the song are not the happy/love ones.

While I appreciate the effort you made, I think you could have analyzed the words a bit better. For example, you could explain that the phrase “khuda hafiz” literally means “may God be your protector”. So when the lover says “how can I say that may God be your protector, when I don’t trust anyone (even God)”. What a beautiful way to portray the possessiveness towards a loved one!
