Bataa do koi kaun gali more Shyaam

Posted on: August 28, 2011

“Kanchan” (1941) is a movie about which not much is known today, except that this movie had Leela Chitnis in it.

Recently I came across a lovely and rare song from this movie. This is a bhajan sung by Leela Chitnis. Only the audio of this song is available, but it is obvious that the song was picturised on her as well.

Here is this lovely bhajan from “Kanchan” (1941). D N Madhok is the lyricist. This movie had Gyan Dutt as the music director. For this song, Gyan Dutt used the tune of a song that Naushad had composed as his assistant in a movie that got shelved. So in effect, this song was a Naushad composition. I thank Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh for this information.

Song-Bataa do koi kaun gali more Shyaam (Kanchan) (1941) Singer-Leela Chitnis, Lyrics-D N Madhok, MD-Naushad

Atul ji,
KANCHAN(1941),a Chitra production, was directed by Manibhai Vyas and the music was given by Gyan Dutt and Naushad, lyrics by D.N.Madhok.The cast was Arunkumar Ahuja,Leela Chitnis,Mubarak,Kesari,Pramila,Vimala Vashishtha etc.
The hero Arunkumar Ahuja-present day actor Govinda’s father-had also acted in Amrapali,Andhera,Aurat( original film of later day Mother India.he had done the role of Shamu,Radha’s husband(Raaj kumar’s role in Mother India),Azad,Chhoti maa, civil marriage(incidentally,he himself had done civil marriage with a muslim girl who became Nirmala Devi-Govinda’s mother),Ek hi Raasta, beti etc etc.
kanchan was the story of a girl who wanted to do a job to which everybody in the family objects, including her husband who relents at the end.

Thanks for this detailed information. This Arun Kumar can easily be mixed with the other Arun Kumar as you had mentioned in the past as both were contemporaries.

Arunji,
Thank you very much for this information,
Further, I have read somewhere that govinda`s mother was a popular playback singer of her times and had sung for Hrishikesh mukherjee`s BAWAARCHI. Whether this information is correct ?????

Prakashchandra ji,
Film Bawarchi had a song “Bhor Aayi,Gaya Andhiyara” in which there are voices of Kishore kumar,Manna Dey,Nirmala Devi,Harindranath Chatopadhyaya, and Laxmi Shankar.
The film also had a song by noted Marathi Natya sangeet artist Miss Faiyyaz and in one song even Asrani has given his voice.

Atul ji,
There is a short but interesting history to this song.
D.N.Madhok,who was a good friend of Naushad in his struggling days had full faith in his capabilities as acomposer and took Naushad to Chandulal Shah.He offered to employ him for his forthcoming film.Naushad prepared a tune for Madhok’s bhajan,”Bata do koyi kaun gali gaye shyam”.However the film was shelved.
When Naushad assisted Gyan Dutt for the punjabi film ‘Mirza sahib’in 1938,Gyan dutt heard it and used it later in Kanchan in 1941.
Although Premnagar was released in 1940 as Naushad’s first independent film, the above song is the first recorded song of Naushad, independently prepared.
-from an extract of D.N.Madhok’s interview.

That is a great tale. So should this tune be attributed to Naushad ?

Atul ji,
Gyan Dutt was a noble soul.He did give the credit to Naushad for this song.
As I have mentioned above(in 1st comment), the credits of the film mentioned both names,Naushad as well as Gyan Dutt as Music Directors, though Naushad’s filmography does not mention this film at many places.
In all fairness, the song should be attributed to Naushad in my humble opinion.
The fact about this tune being of Naushad is also mentioned by Mr.Surjit Singh ji,in one of his writings.
