In this blog, I post gems from the golden era of Bollywood movie music, which happened to be roughly from 1950 to 1980, though I have posted songs that are from the times falling outside this era as well. Many of the songs that I have posted are well known even today, while many other [...]

In the past, I have posted a couple of memorable songs from “Ek Gaaon Ki Kahaani” (1957). Both the songs were sung by Talat Memmood and picturised on him.

When one talks of “Dard” (1947), one is mostly reminded on the immortal song “Afsaana likh rahi hoon dile bekaraar ka” which took the natio by storm. It was sung by Umadevi (later known as Tuntun) and picturised on Munawar Sultana.

“Singaar” (1949) is a movie starring Suraiyya, and there are some very nice songs sung by her in this movie.

I was aware of a movie called “Naatak” (1974), but there was another movie of this name in 1947. “Naatak” (1947) had a very young Suraiyya in lead role. So she obviously sang her own songs in this movie.

Suraiyya, who ruled the roost as am actor-singer gradually ran out of steam in 1950s. The fact that she would sing only for herself meant that as her demand as an actress fell, she stopped getting simging offers as well.
