Greetings to all on the occasion of Basant Panchmi today, the festival that heralds the onset of the spring season. Although it is still the month of Maagh (as per the Hindu calendar) and the beginning of the month of Pha’gun, which is the month of colors, is still a few days hence, the season of colors and freshness has been initiated. (Pha’gun is the month of colors, and the last day of Pha’gun is the celebration of Holi, which will be celebrated on 8th March this year). Basant is also a huge celebration with our brethren across the border, and the festival of kite flying and sumptuous food is already in progress since the day before. In Lahore, Rawalpindi, Sialkot, Faisalabad, Kasur and across all of the Punjab, this festival is energetically celebrated as ‘Jashn-e-Baharaan’ (Celebration of Spring) or simply, Basant.

In north India, after the chill of the winter starts to wane, the season of spring sets in. Spring is considered to be the beginning of new life. It is the season of rebirth and bloom, the season of arrival of happiness. The fields of mustard are blooming with yellow flowers, as if a soft yellow carpet is laid on the earth. The wheat plants start to ripen and swing like gold in the welcome warmth of the sunshine. Gardens are alive as colorful flowers starts blossoming. Today, the day of Basant Panchami, is celebrated as the welcoming of colors and happiness. On this day, people will wear something yellow and in homes, a yellow dish – sweet rice or yellow halwaa, will be prepared. And of course, kite flying is a big sport for today.

This day is another very significant occasion in our Hindu traditions. It is the celebration of Goddess Saraswati, the Goddess of Learning and Wisdom.

This day is also one more very special celebration, and that is the celebration of Kaamdev, the God of Love in Hindu traditions. (More about that in the accompanying post on “Ab Aayee Basant Bahaar” ).

The song in this post is the quintessential community celebration for Basant Panchami, from the film ‘Upkar’, the biggest hit of 1967. There are so many actors and performers and singers in this song, that I ran out of distinct colors trying to color code the lyrics for all the singers and their combinations. (I ended up using one color for chorus – in the song there are some lines which are male chorus only, some lines which are female chorus only, and some lines which are combined chorus and main singers). In any case, the result is that the lyrics are already very colorful to see, and that is keeping in with today’s spirit of celebrations.

There are as many as seven singers in this song, and as many performers, with additional actors playing other roles also present in the picturization. The singers and performers list is as follows – Manna Dey singing for Pran, Mahendra Kapoor singing for Manoj Kumar, Asha Bhosle singing for Asha Parekh, Shamshad Begum singing for actress Shammi, actor Sunder singing for himself, Mohan Choti singing for himself, and a singer by the name Mahesh singing for Gulshan Bawra. That is quiet a list.

(Sunder, Shammi, Mohan Choti and Gulshan Bawra play brief cameo roles in this song. Sunder, a widower, has two sons, Mohan Choti and Gulshan Bawra. He is a trader selling nuts, popcorn etc. Shammi (referred to as Pyaari in the song, by Sunder) is also a widow, who owns the ‘bhatti’ (furnace set up), where Sunder sends the stuff from his shop to be heated for selling. And of course, he has eyes for her, trying to convince her for matrimony. The one antaraa all these actors sing in this song, tells the complete story).

Other actors visible in this clip are Manmohan, Prem Chopra, Kamini Kaushal, Manmohan Krishan, Madan Puri and Kanhayyaalal. There is another lady, standing besides Manmohan (at 1:08 in the clip) and later can be seen in the song doing some dance steps with Prem Chopra. She plays the role of Manmohan’s wife in the film. I am not able to place a name to her, and request other knowledgeable readers to kindly help to identify her.

The song is set in a village fair, and there is a lot of fun and exuberance built into the scene. The song itself is structured in three parts. The first antaraa talks about the bonhomie and goodwill amongst all. The second antaraa is the comical exchange between Sunder and Shammi. And the third antaraa is where Asha Parekh steps out to join the dancing and express her inner feelings. The overall picturization is very good, but the third antaraa is just excellent. The manner in which Asha Parekh and Manoj Kumar see each other is superb; their eyes stray on to each other, they will gaze when the other is looking elsewhere, as soon as their gazes meet, one of them turns away the gaze – it is a minute expression, yet a very wonderful expression of first love. There is verve and audacity, and yet the bashfulness and community presence overpowers it – all very tenderly expressed.

‘Upkar’ (1967) is a picture I think one does not need to write a lot about. A huge hit in its own time, riding on the waves of patriotism (post the 1965 conflict), and over the decades, one of the perennial favorites of the TV channels, and of course the publicity machinery of the govt. I remember this anecdote from the late sixties and seventies. One of my cousins in Chandigarh was working for the Public Relations department in the state govt. of Haryana. And he used to tell us that he and many others were on the road almost two weeks every month, and would be showing this picture at every village, and for any and every celebration. So much so he remembers the entire film, dialogues and all, by heart.

Regardless, this was the film that established Manoj Kumar as Mr. Bharat of the Bombay film world, an image that he has carried through all his film career.

The weapon ascribed to Kaamdeva is a bow and arrow – the bow being made of sugarcane, stringed with honeybees, and the arrows are made of the fragrant flowers of spring. In the Hindu mythology, the season of spring is the season for love and amorous relationships. The first encounter of enchantment between Shakuntala and King Dushyanta is in Vasant ritu, the season of spring.

The celebration of Basant, like the festival of Holi, finds a significant expression in Hindi films. As one searches for musical episodes and songs related to Basant in Hindi films, one comes across a fairly large number of songs that are related to a community celebration of this festival, and also related to intimate expressions of love between a man and a woman. Even in the examples of community celebrations, the premise of the songs always revolves around and touches the themes of love.

January 28th is the 75th birthday of Suman Kalyanpur (nee Hemadi). She was born on January 28, 1937 in Dhaka in undivided Bengal where she spent her early childhood. In some places, her maiden surname is spelt as Hemadey probably having something to do with her Bengal connection. Her family hailed from Hemadi village in Udipi district of Karnataka and belonged to Chitrapur Saraswat Brahmin community which has given actors/directors to Hindi cinema such as Guru Dutt, Girish Karnad, Shyam Benegal, Leena Chandavarkar, Deepika Padukone to name a few. Her family migrated from Dhaka to Mumbai (then Bombay) in 1943. Talat Mehmood noticed Suman Kalyanpur during one of her concerts and was very much impressed with her singing. He agreed to sing a duet with her for the film Darwaaza (1954). The song was “ek dil do hain talabgaar” which was her first song as a playback singer for Hindi films.

Suman Kalyanpur had to contend with remaining under the shadow of Lata Mangeshkar mainly because many in the Hindi film industry felt that her voice was too close to that of Lata Mangeshkar. Under the circumstances, Suman Kalyanpur used to be called upon to sing mostly when Lata Mangeshkar was not available for song recording. For instance, Suman Kalyanpur sang a number of duets with Mohammed Rafi when Lata Mangeshkar was not singing with him during the late 60s. She rendered many solo songs which are remembered even now. Some of these songs have already been discussed in this blog. Suman Kalyanpur was bestowed with Lata Mangeshkar Award for 2009 by the Government of Maharashtra.

January 28th also happens to be the death anniversary of maestro O P Nayyar. I was keen to discuss a song which has been sung by Suman Kalyanpur and set to music by O P Nayyar. Having known that she had not sung any song for O P Nayyar except a few lines in “mohabbat karlo ji barlo” in film AAR PAR (1954), it was a futile exercise for finding such a song. However, my search resulted in getting me one of her rare songs “koi pukaare dheere se tujhe” from film MANGU (1954). This film had two music directors – Mohammed Shafi and O P Nayyar and this song was set to music by Mohammed Shafi. When I heard this song for the first time , I liked it so much that I felt that this was an appropriate song to be discussed on the occasion of her 75th birthday.

The song is a lori written by Saba Afghani. The humming at the beginning and mixing with mukhda of the song, Suman Kalyanpur’s rendition in her soft voice, Mohammed Shafi ‘s tune and the orchestration create the atmosphere for a lori song. This was Suman Kalyanpur’s first solo song for a Hindi film and even at this stage, her voice resembled that of Lata Mangeshkar. Perhaps, this may be one ofthe reasons as to why she sang only one song with Lata Mangeshkar “kabhi aaj kabhi kaal kabhi parson”, in the film CHAAND (1959).

Comments on YT indicate that this song was originally slated to be recorded by Lata Mangeshkar but at the last moment, she suggested to Mohammed Shafi to take a new singer for this song. If it is true, it is somewhat intriguing as to why Lata Mangeshkar decided not to sing this song. It is also not clear whether this song was retained in the film when O P Nayyar took over as music director. We are lucky that at least the audio clip is available for all of us to enjoy this beautiful lori.

I have some difficulties in getting the correct words ofthe song in at 3-4 places and I hope that Atul will be able to decipher them.
