“Aapki Parchhaayian” (1964), like “Anpadh” (1962) was one movie that enhanced Madan Mohan’s repulation as being the ghazal king of Bollywood music world. In both these movies Raja Mehdi Ali Khan was the lyricist who penned some unforgettable songs.
Here is one such song from “Aapki Parchhaayian” (1964). It is sung by Rafi. It is picturised on Dharmendra and Supriya Chaudhary.
Dharmendra needs no introduction, but who is Supriya Chatterji. Is she a one movie wonder ? Some search told me that she was also the heroine in “Begaana” (1963) opposite Dharmendra and in “Door Gagan ki Chhaon Mein” opposite Kishore Kumar. But that is just the tip of the iceberg. She is a major star is Bangla movies and she formeda lead pair with Uttam Kumar in Bangla movies in 1960s and 1970s. I recall now that the town where I was growing up had one movie hall that often showed Bangla movies and the publicity of this movie ( as was the case those days) was done by a person seated in a rickshaw distributing pamplets and making announcement about the movie. All these Bangla movies had the same lead cast viz Uttam KUmar and Supriya Chatterji. Listeneing to this publicity, I thought that Uttam Kumar and Supriya Chatterji were the only actors in Bangla movies those days.
Well, this post is about this song, and it is a gem of a song. There are other such gems in this movie as well.
Song-Main nigaahen tere chehre se hataaun kaise (Aapki Parchhaayian) (1964) singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Raja Mehdi Ali Khan, MD-Madan Mohan
Lyrics
main nigaahen tere chehre se hataaun kaise
main nigaahen tere chehre se hataaun kaise
lut gaye hosh to phir hosh mein aaun kaise
main nigaahen tere chehre se hataaun kaise
main nigaahen
chhaa rahi thi teri mahki huyi zulfon ki ghataa
teri aankhon ne
teri aankhon ne pilaa di to main peetaa hi gayaa
taubaa taubaa taubaa taubaa taubaa taubaa
wo nashaa hai ke bataaun kaise
main nigaahen
meri aankhon mein gile-shikwe hain aur pyaar bhi hai
aarzuen
aarzuen bhi hain aur hasrat-e-deedaar bhi hai
itne toofaan toofaan
itne toofaan main aankhon mein chhupaaun kaise
main nigaahen
shokh nazren ye sharaarat se na baaz aayengi
kabhi roothengi
kabhi roothengi kabhi mil ke palat jaayengi
tujh se nibh jaayegi
nibh jaayegi
tujh se nibh jaayegi main in se nibhaaun kaise
main nigaahen tere chehre se hataaun kaise
This is a fantastic song – one of my favourites.
Madan Mohan’s composition, Rafi saab’s voice. Very special.
Lol at the comment about Uttam Kumar and Supria Chatterji being the only actors in Bangla movies at that time.

I really love Rafi singing ghazals and this is one shining example of he got everything just right!
