Watching old movie songs can often turn out to be lessons in history. For instance, how many people in India know that Goa was not part of India till 1961 and that it was still a Portuguese territory till 1961 ?

In this song “Johar Mahmood in Goa” (1965) , I S Johar and Mahmood enter Goa defying the international boundary which amounts to infiltering into Goa illegally and they are accordingly arrested by the Goan authority. So Johar and Mahmood sing this song while they are being carried to Goan jail in a Goa police van.

That way, this song is a “patriotic” song, though it must be said that this “patriotic” movie was made in 1965, four years after Goa had become an Indian territory. In my blog, I have classified this song as a “bus” song. And yes, this is not a wedding song, since “sarkaari dulha” is a term that is used in India for jailbirds.

This song was written by Qamar Jalalabadi and the music was by Kalyanji Anandji. This song was sung by Rafi and Manna Dey, and it was a “louddspeaker” song for me, in the sense that I heard this a song during my childhood, without knowing which movie this song was from.
