The lyrics would really move you, in case you get the context of the song. And one need not know the story line to get the context. Just look at the video. The actors Rajesh Khanna and Rekha, as well as the singers Kishore and Lata make the context so clear that I need not fill in the background details. Very powerful emotions have been penned in very simple language by Gulshan Bawra. It was one of the last hits of R D Burman before the trend of chaalu songs lashed Bollywood like a thunderstorm.
Not just the storyline and the context of the song, I also feel for Rajesh Khanna. He lost his superstardom thanks to his unprofessional ways. After he realised his mistake, he turned over a new leaf and tried very hard, acting very good roles in movies with nice storylines, but his efforts would repeatedly come cropper. A few of his movies were hailed by critics, and liked by discerning audience, but he had lost too much ground and all the hard work put up by him in late 1970s and early 1980s went largely in vain. But he showed glimpses of his acting talent, unlike his star appeal that was on show during his superstar days. Rekha on the other hand was enjoying the zenith of her career.
A very nice song. Kishore Kumar earned national award for this song.
Agar tum na hote (Agar tum na hote 1983) Kishore,Lata, Lyrics-Gulshan Baawra,MD-R D Burman
Lyrics
hamen aur jeene ki chaahat na hoti
hamen aur jeene ki chaahat na hoti
agar tum na hote, agar tum na hote
hamen aur jeene ki chaahat na hoti
agar tum na hote, agar tum na hote
hamen jo tumhaara shaara na milataa
bhanvar mein hi rahte kinaaraa na milata
hamen jo tumhaara sahaara na milataa
bhanvar mein hi rahte kinaaraa na milata
kinaare pe bhii to lahar aa Dubotii
agar tum na hote, agar tum na hote
hamen aur jeene ki chaahat na hoti
agar tum na hote, agar tum na hote
tumhen kyaa bataauun ke tum mere kyaa ho
meri zindagii ka tum hi aasaraa ho
tumhen kyaa bataaoon ke tum mere kyaa ho
meri zindagii kaa tum hi aasaraa ho
Translation
I would have had no motivation to live if it was not for you
Had I not received your support,
I would be caught in a whirlpool, and would be unable to reach the shore
I could have still drowned at the shore by strong currents,
but for your helping hand
I do not have words to tell what you mean to me
You are the last hope of my life
I would not have had my hopes kept alive, if it was not for you
I will happily share all your sorrows
I will not complain come what may
World has laughhed at me, happiness has bypassed me
I would have had no motivation to live but for me

Definitely one of the better songs to have come out in the 1980s.
I find Lata’s voice a bit too shrill but the “hotey” word could have been better pronounced by her but overall it is a very good song.
